USE OF ANIMAL MANURES AND WHEY AS A SYSTEM FOR ORGANIC FARMING AND ITS EFFECT ON GROWTH AND PRODUCTION OF POTATOES
Abstract
An experiment was carried out in the experimental field of Horticulture Dept., College of Agriculture, University of Baghdad for two seasons (spring 2007 and spring 2008)to produce potato by organic fertilization. In spring 2007 season, class A seed tubers while in spring 2008 season, class Elite of the cv. Desiree potato was used. Two experiment were designed, first was the use three sources of organic fertilizers (Poultry, cattle and sheep manure)in addition to conventional mineral fertilizer and no fertilization (control) treatment. In second experiment, cattle manure fertilizer in addition to whey were used. Results could be summarized as follows:
· Application of organic fertilizers regard less the source in creased water holding capacity of soil at different moisture tensions.
· Application of poultry manure at 10%level increased the percent infected roots with mycorrizal fungi (38.31 and 35.17%respectively).Whey treated soil with 15%cattle manure had the greatest % of mycorrizal root infection for both seasons (71.96 and 71.96% respectively).
· Soil treated with 10% poultry manures hasten the field emergence and was 26.21 and 27.14 days. Cattle manure at 15% with whey had the lowest number of days for field emergence in both seasons (28.97 and 29.68 days respectively).
· Manure treatment regardless the source and cattle manure 15% +whey all caused 100% emergence for both seasons Greatest number of stems was found when 10% poultry manure was added (4.60 and 4.52 stem/plant) and 15%cattle manure with whey was added (4.44 and 4.36 stem/plant)for the two seasons respectively ).Total leaf area on the other hand was found in mineral fertilized plants for both seasons (34.30 and 33.30 dm 2/plant respectively ).Greatest dry matter percentage was found with 10% poultry manure treatment (56.29 and 55.27 g/plant)and with 15% cattle manure and whey treatment (56.20and 55.16 g/ plant) for the two seasons respectively.
· Highest percent of N in leaves and tubers was found in 10% poultry manure treatment (2.31,2.28,1.54 and 1.51%) highest P content in both plant parts was in 15% cattle manure +whey (1.44,1.40,0.90and 0.88%), whereas ,highest K content was found in mineral fertilized plants(3.71,3.68,2.70 and 2.66%for both organs and seasons respectively).
· Highest no. of marketable tubers plant was produced with 10% poultry manure application (7.09 and6.91 tuber/plant), while mineral fertilization resulted a greatest average marketable tuber weight(121.96 and 123.55g) and highest marketable yield/plant (821.06 and 810.51g/plant) for the two seasons respectively.
· Mineral fertilization produced the greatest total and marketable yield for both season(45.88,45.32,43.72 and 43.22 ton/ha respectively). Poultry manure at 10% dominated in tuber quality characteristics where great at percent of dry matter (18.6 and 17.6%),starch (12.5 and11.7%)and total soluble solids(1.79 and1.67%)was found for both seasons respectively.
· Poultry manure treatment at 10% in creased tuber content of the amino acids including Glutamic acid (1.667 and 1.663),Aspargine (0.781 and 0.778),Alanine (0.881 and0.878),Arginine (0.996 and 0.993),Cysteine (0.351 and 0.349) and Histidine (0.463 and0.460mg/100g) for the two season respectively.
· Treatment of 10% poultry manure lowered nitrate percent in tubers 0.09 and 0.10 % for the two seasons respectively .Treatment of 15% cattle manure with whey also reduced nitrate percent to 01.and 011% for the two seasons respectively, whereas it was 0.20%,0.21% for mineral fertilizered potato and0.16%.0.17% for control of plant to the two seasons respectively
