" {هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاء وَالْقَمَرَ نُوراً}" يونس5

الشمس نجم (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%85) غازي في النظام الشمسي (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D8%B8%D8%A7%D9%8 5_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D9%85%D8%B3%D9 %8A)، تدور حولها جميع الكواكب ومن بينها كوكب الأرض (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B1%D8%B6) وأجسام أخرى تدور ضمن مدارات (http://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%A7% D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA&action=edit) ثابتة حول الشمس، تتنوع هذه الأجسام مابين كويكب (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%83%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%83%D8%A8) ، نيزك (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%B2%D9%83) ، مذنب (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%85%D8%B0%D9%86%D8%A8) و غبار كوني (http://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D8%BA%D8%A8%D8%A7% D8%B1_%D9%83%D9%88%D9%86%D9%8A&action=edit).والشمس نجم متوهج ناتج عن تفاعلات الهيليوم وتكون سرعته عندالقطبين أكبر من سرعته في المنتصف اذ تبلغ درجة حرارته حوالى 6000 درجة مئوية على السطح و15مليون درجة مئوية في المنتصف وهو أقرب نجم لنا في المجموعة الشمسية ولذلك يحجب نوره عنّا رؤية باقي النجوم في النهار .وهو أيضا سبب استقرار المجموعة الشمسية وعدم تباعدها عن بعض وحجم الشمس يساوى مليون مرة حجم الأرض وقد استطاع العلماء حساب متى سوف يتوقف الشمس عن انبعاث الضوء والحرارة بعد بلاين السنين عندما يكون حجم الهليوم مساويا لحجم نصف الغاز المتبقي



إنّ الشمس نجم رئيسي مع صنف طيفي (http://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D8%B5%D9%86%D9%81_ %D8%B7%D9%8A%D9%81%D9%8A&action=edit) يسمى جي 2، هذا يعني أن الشمس أكبر وأحر جداً من النجوم المتوسطة لكنها أصغر جداً مِنْ النجوم التي تسمى النجم الأزرق (http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%85_%D8% A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B2%D8%B1%D9%82) ، ويقدر عمر الشمس بحوالي 4,6 بليون سنة تقريباً. والشمس هي أقرب نجم لكوكبنا الأرض,و حرارته مرتفعة بالنسبة إلى حرارة الأرض بملايين الأضعاف.وقد استطاع العلماء معرفة خمود نيران الشمس الحارة.
